Armed bandits launched an attack on Magama Local Government Area of Niger State, killing three people and rustling more than one thousand cows in a fresh wave of violence.
The assault, which began at around 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 30, spread through the Ibeto, Salka, and Koso communities and was still underway at the time of reporting.
A resident said that the bandits had vowed to invade Kura community later this evening.
Many villagers fled into the bush to seek safety, while others locked themselves indoors as the attackers continued their rampage.
“The bandits are now moving towards Magaman Daji community, apparently attempting to cross into Zamfara State after their operation,” the source reported.
The eyewitness urged both the state and federal governments to deploy additional security personnel to the area, pointing out that the nearest army barracks are in Kontagora.
Efforts to reach the Niger State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, for confirmation were unsuccessful, as he did not answer his phone.
As of press time, the bandits’ operation was still ongoing.
Earlier on Monday, bandits abducted Ahmed Mohammed, popularly known as Barrister Ahmed Lawyer, a commissioner with the Niger State Independent Electoral Commission, along with his driver, former SUBEB Chairman Mohammed Bawa Niworu, and several motorists.
