Bauchi Assembly Approves Bill to Establish Free Sanitary Pad Banks

The Bauchi State House of Assembly has passed a bill to establish free sanitary pad banks in schools, correctional facilities, and community centres across the state.

Chairman of the House Committee on Health, Lawal Dauda, presented the bill during Wednesday’s plenary session, highlighting its importance in addressing menstrual hygiene management and reducing absenteeism among schoolgirls.

“This initiative will improve hygiene for indigent adolescent girls, women, and female inmates during their menstrual periods,” Dauda stated.

According to him, Bauchi is the first state in Nigeria to pass such legislation, marking a significant step toward tackling menstrual health challenges and promoting women’s development.

The Speaker of the House, Abubakar Suleiman, commended the legislators and advocacy groups for their dedication to the bill, emphasising that it would positively impact underprivileged girls and women who struggle to afford sanitary products.

Reacting to the bill’s passage, Comfort Attah, Executive Director of ASHH Foundation, expressed gratitude to the state government and partner organisations for their support.

However, she noted that the bill must be signed into law by the governor before full implementation can begin.
