Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has accused the Nigerian Government of using the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to target him and his officials because he refuses to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The governor made the claim on Wednesday in Bauchi during the signing of the 2026 appropriation bill into law, noting that one of his commissioners is currently being detained by the EFCC.
“As a governor and head of the opposition, my commissioner has been held and will not be released by the EFCC. Even with my constitutional immunity, my name was mentioned in a court motion in Nigeria—me, Bala Mohammed,” he said.
He added, “I don’t need to respond publicly or go to court, but politics in Nigeria has reached this level. The APC-led federal government believes it can use courts and institutions like the EFCC to persecute Nigerians outside their party.”

Governor Mohammed, who chairs the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, insisted that no amount of pressure would force him to join the APC.
He warned that his previous silence, maintained for the sake of peace and security, would no longer continue if the Nigerian Government persists. “If they don’t stop, we will declare war. I won’t allow anyone to criminalise me for not being in their party,” he said.
The governor further alleged that despite the Nigerian Government controlling 51 per cent of national resources, it has provided nothing tangible for Bauchi State. “They have not built a single kilometre of road or provided water. Even security agencies—whom I fund—dare to make demands,” he said.
He also criticised the federal tax system, warning that it would impoverish Nigerians if left unreviewed.
The EFCC recently filed fresh criminal charges against Yakubu Adamu, Bauchi State Commissioner for Finance, and others over alleged terrorism financing involving $9.7 million.
