Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, has called for unity among political actors in the state, warning against divisive politics and misplaced priorities as political activities intensify across the country.
Speaking at a State Executive Council meeting, Diri urged politicians to prioritise shared values, cultural identity, and communal ties over party differences. He stressed that political divisions should not undermine the common ancestry, geography, and social bonds of the Bayelsa people.
“Political parties will come and go, but we remain one people. We must be mindful of our words and actions, because beyond politics, we share the same communities and identity,” he said.

The Governor also cautioned against inflammatory language and personal attacks, noting that such conduct can escalate tensions and destabilise communities. “We must conduct politics with responsibility,” he emphasised.
Diri expressed concern about misplaced priorities in public debates, particularly the focus on pipeline surveillance contracts, and encouraged attention to broader issues such as resource ownership, economic development, and long-term benefits for the Niger Delta.
“We are debating pipeline contracts, while neglecting bigger questions about ownership of our natural resources. We must refocus on what truly benefits our people,” he stated.
The Governor concluded by calling for a more respectful, issue-based political culture that reflects the dignity and aspirations of the Bayelsa people, ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.
