Bayern Munich Miss Chance to Extend Lead After Dortmund Draw

Bayern Munich were held to a 2-2 draw by Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, failing to fully capitalise on Bayer Leverkusen’s earlier slip-up in the Bundesliga title race.

With Leverkusen playing out a goalless stalemate at home to Union Berlin earlier in the day, Bayern had the opportunity to open up an eight-point gap at the top of the table with five matches remaining. Instead, they now sit six points ahead, still favourites for the title but ruing a missed chance to tighten their grip.

Dortmund stunned the Allianz Arena early in the second half when Maximilian Beier nodded home between the legs of Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig, finishing off a rare counter-attack after a first period dominated by the hosts.

Despite fielding a depleted squad due to injuries, Bayern turned the game around with two quick goals midway through the second half. Substitute Serge Gnabry made an immediate impact, setting up Raphael Guerreiro to equalise against his former club in the 65th minute. Four minutes later, Gnabry weaved his way through the defence and smashed Bayern into the lead.

However, Borussia Dortmund found a way back once more, as Waldemar Anton pounced on a rebound from Serhou Guirassy’s shot to level the scores with 15 minutes to go.

Veteran forward Thomas Müller, who is set to leave the club at the end of the season after 25 years, remained upbeat. “We’ve moved a step closer to the title and created plenty of chances,” he said. “That gives us confidence for the Champions League.”

Bayern travel to face Inter Milan on Wednesday in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final, trailing 2-1 from the first leg.

Harry Kane echoed Müller’s sentiment but emphasised the need for efficiency. “We’ll get opportunities—we just need to be more clinical when they come.”

The usually fiery clash between Germany’s top clubs was notably subdued, with Dortmund sitting mid-table and out of European contention. Bayern spent most of the first half camped in the opposition’s final third, but lacked the finishing touch to show for their dominance.

Injury problems continued to pile up for Vincent Kompany’s side, with defender Kim Min-jae forced off due to a lingering Achilles issue, leaving Bayern with only one fit centre-back.
