Bellarmine Mugabe, son of late former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, will return to the Alexandra Regional Court in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Tuesday, where he will appear alongside his co-accused, Tobias Matonhodze.
The two men are facing a string of serious charges following a February incident at the Mugabe family residence in Hyde Park, where a 23-year-old gardener was shot.
Mugabe and Matonhodze have been charged with attempted murder, defeating the ends of justice, unlawful possession of a firearm, and violating the Immigration Act.
Last month, both men withdrew their bail application after prosecutors argued they posed a flight risk, citing concerns over their alleged irregular immigration status in South Africa.
Meanwhile, efforts to resolve the case may be nearing a conclusion. Mugabe’s lawyer, Sinenhlanhla Mnguni, said discussions between the defence and the prosecution are almost complete.
“Negotiations between the State and the defence are at an advanced stage,” Mnguni told Channel Africa. “Prosecutor Maphere indicated that they are about 98% complete.”
