Benin Approves Seven-Year Presidency

Lawmakers in Benin on Saturday ratified a constitutional change that increases the presidential term from 5 years to 7 and establishes an upper house of parliament.

The cap on the number of presidential terms remains at two in this West African country.

Current president Patrice Talon is set to leave office next April after a decade in office.

His chosen candidate, Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni, is favoured to win the presidential election scheduled for April.

The amendment received substantial support from lawmakers, with 90 voting in favour and 19 opposed.

The new Senate will consist of at least 25 members, including some appointed by the president and other ex officio members, such as former presidents.
