A survivor of the June 2025 Yelwata attack in Benue State, Msurshima Apeh, provided harrowing testimony before the United States Congress on Thursday as part of a hearing on religious persecution and President Donald Trump’s decision to reinstate Nigeria on the Country of Particular Concern list.
Speaking virtually, Apeh recounted the night of the attack by suspected armed herdsmen, describing how the terrorists butchered victims with cutlasses and guns.
She stated that after the initial assault, the attackers poured petrol on the building and set many victims ablaze.

Apeh saved herself by climbing a tree, from where she tragically watched her five children being slaughtered below.
The Yelwata attack resulted in the deaths of numerous civilians and five security personnel.
In response to the crisis, President Bola Tinubu visited Benue State to meet with stakeholders and victims.
The Inspector-General of Police vowed increased deployment and confirmed the arrest of 26 suspects connected to the killings, which have sparked widespread national outrage over the escalating security threats.
