Benue, Plateau Killings: Police Chief Announces 53 Arrests

Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, announced that at least 53 individuals have been detained concerning the recent surge of violent attacks in Benue and Plateau states, which resulted in numerous fatalities and left many others either injured or displaced.

During a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, Egbetokun referred to the massacre that occurred on June 13 in Yelewata community in Benue State as a “coordinated act of terror.”

Egbetokun noted that 26 individuals were apprehended for the Yelewata attack, 22 suspects were detained regarding the attacks in Plateau, and an additional five were arrested in Benue for a more recent incident.

He reported that 47 individuals lost their lives and 27 were injured in the Yelewata assault, while also mentioning that two general-purpose machine guns and eight AK-47 rifles used in the attack were seized.
