Blackout Hits Nigeria After National Grid Fails

Nigeria’s electricity system suffered another major setback on Monday as the national power grid collapsed, plunging large parts of the country into darkness during the festive ‘Detty December‘ season.

Power distribution reportedly crashed to a historic low of just 50 megawatts by 3:12 p.m., leaving most distribution companies with zero supply. Only Ibadan and Abuja received minimal electricity, while the rest of the country went completely dark.

A partial recovery was recorded around 3:50 p.m., when supply reportedly rose to 120 megawatts, though this remained far below the level required to meet national demand. As of the last update, authorities had not provided a clear timeline for complete restoration.

The latest collapse adds to a growing list of grid failures blamed on ageing infrastructure, poor maintenance, and systemic weaknesses in Nigeria’s power sector. For many Nigerians, the blackout once again highlights the persistent instability of the national grid.
