Former United Kingdom Prime Minister Tony Blair has urged the Labour Party to focus strictly on policy rather than personality to rescue its political fortunes.
Writing in a comprehensive essay of over 5,000 words, the three-time election winner argued that a leadership change will mean nothing unless the party initiates a fundamental policy debate.
He insisted that Labour’s only viable path to electoral success requires it to firmly occupy the “radical centre”.
Blair’s intervention arrives as potential rivals circle Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who currently battles severely low popularity ratings while his government struggles to project a clear vision.
Disagreeing with critics who blame Starmer’s personal style or communication failures, Blair declared that shifting the party leftward or attempting to rejoin the European Union would destroy the government’s electoral prospects.
He specifically targeted the mooted solutions of leading potential challengers, including Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham and former Health Minister Wes Streeting.
Instead of changing leaders or relitigating Brexit, Blair advised the government to champion business interests through the ongoing artificial intelligence revolution.
He also urged leadership to prioritise cheaper energy over cleaner energy and recommended that the UK forge a structured, formal relationship with the EU rather than trying to reverse its departure from the bloc.
