At least 10 people have died after a passenger boat collided with a pontoon bridge and capsized in northern India, authorities said on Friday.
The accident occurred on the Yamuna River in Mathura, where the vessel, carrying 27 passengers, overturned after the impact.
Police confirmed that 10 bodies had been recovered, while the number of those still missing remains unclear.
“So far, 10 bodies have been recovered,” senior police officer Shailesh Kumar Pandey told reporters.

Emergency responders, including fire service personnel and divers, were deployed to search for survivors, with additional teams from the National Disaster Response Force mobilised to support ongoing rescue operations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the incident, saying he was deeply saddened by the loss of lives and wished those injured a swift recovery, while noting that local authorities were providing assistance to victims.
Boat accidents remain frequent on India’s waterways, often linked to overcrowding, weak enforcement of safety regulations and a lack of proper safety equipment.
In a similar incident in 2024, 15 people, including 13 children on a school outing, died after a boat capsized in Gujarat.
