Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro remains in stable but serious condition at the DF Star Hospital after being diagnosed with pneumonia.
The 70-year-old leader, who is currently serving a prison sentence, was hospitalised following a high fever and a concerning drop in oxygen levels.
While his condition is stable, medical staff reported a decline in his kidney function and elevated inflammation markers, necessitating his continued stay in the intensive care unit.
Doctors have traced the lung infection to bronchoaspiration, a condition in which food or gastric contents are inhaled into the respiratory tract.
This issue is a lingering complication from the 2018 assassination attempt in which Bolsonaro was stabbed in the abdomen.

The original injury has caused years of health struggles, including chronic digestive problems and recurring surgeries, which specialists say directly led to his current respiratory crisis.
The health emergency comes as Bolsonaro serves a 27-year sentence for his involvement in a failed coup attempt following the 2022 elections.
Despite his imprisonment, he remains a powerful political figure ahead of this October’s presidential race.
While the Supreme Court has repeatedly denied his legal team’s requests for house arrest, his son Flavio—who has been tapped to challenge President Lula in the upcoming election—has publicly accused authorities of negligence regarding his father’s well-being.
