European champions Paris Saint-Germain fell to a shocking 1-0 defeat to Brazilian team Botafogo in the Club World Cup on Thursday, after Lionel Messi showcased his brilliance with a stunning free-kick goal for Inter Miami.
As the second round of group matches kicked off, Atletico Madrid and Palmeiras also secured victories, but Botafogo captured the spotlight.
A first-half strike from Igor Jesus was enough to make the difference, effectively ensuring last year’s Copa Libertadores champions a spot in the knockout stages from Group B, in front of 53,699 spectators at the Pasadena Rose Bowl in California.
PSG, considered one of the favourites in FIFA’s 32-team tournament following an impressive season that culminated in a spectacular 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in the Champions League final, saw their aim for a win hindered by a strong performance from their opponents from Rio de Janeiro.
Botafogo took the lead against the odds in the 36th minute as Jefferson Savarino’s pass sliced through the PSG defence and found Jesus. He skillfully deceived the covering Willian Pacho before sending a shot that took a minor deflection past Gianluigi Donnarumma into the net.
With this win, Botafogo is well-positioned for the last 16, with a final group match against Atlético approaching on Monday.

Earlier, Messi netted his signature free-kick to lead Inter Miami to a 2-1 comeback victory over Porto in Atlanta within Group A.
The Argentine icon curled the ball into the top corner with a set-piece just nine minutes into the second half, sealing an unexpected win for the MLS team and boosting their chances of advancement.
Samu Aghehowa’s early penalty had given Porto the lead, and they dominated the first half. However, Telasco Segovia fired Miami back on level terms before Messi’s free-kick enabled them to achieve a huge win.
Javier Mascherano’s Inter Miami has secured four points from two matches, putting them at the top of the group with Palmeiras.
A draw between Inter Miami and Palmeiras on Monday will secure both teams’ places in the last 16.
