Former Brazil and Inter Milan forward Adriano, known as the ‘Emperor’ during his prime, officially retired from football on Sunday in a farewell match held at Flamengo, the club where his once bright career began.

The 42-year-old was once seen as a future footballing legend, but he ultimately fell victim to the challenges of fame in sports and issues with alcohol.

The testimonial match, hosted at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro, concluded with the ‘Flamengo Legends’ defeating ‘Friends of Italy’ 4-3.

The event provided Adriano with the opportunity to say goodbye formally, eight years after his final official appearance, featuring numerous Brazilian stars like striker Romario and goalkeeper Julio Cesar.

The player, who earned 48 caps for Brazil, was joined on the field by his son Adrianinho and found the net playing for both sides.

An emotional Adriano received embraces from all players as the screen displayed a message crafted by artificial intelligence from his late father.

A winner of the Copa America in 2004 and the Confederations Cup the following year, Adriano mysteriously faded from the spotlight at just 22 years old.

After starting in the 2006 World Cup in Germany, he slowly lost his position on the national team and in club football, struggling with weight issues and alcohol dependence.

He secured four Serie A championships with Inter Milan and lifted the Italian Cup twice, also playing for Italian teams Roma, Parma, and Fiorentina before ending his career in 2016 following a short period with Miami United.
