In Guinea’s capital, Conakry, dozens of individuals have suffered injuries in the aftermath of an explosion at a fuel depot in the Kaloum neighbourhood.
The incident transpired in the early hours of Monday, just after midnight, accompanied by a subsequent fire, as reported by the AFP news agency.
The country’s military authorities have yet to provide official comments on the situation, refraining from confirming any potential fatalities. However, the privately owned Le Courrier de Conakry news website states that a minimum of four individuals have lost their lives, with around 100 others sustaining injuries in the explosion.
Conakry’s primary hospitals, Ignace Deen and Donka, are grappling with an influx of numerous injured patients, according to the AFP.
The explosion has inflicted significant damage on the surrounding area, particularly Kaloum, Conakry’s administrative centre housing the presidency and most ministries.
An eyewitness revealed to AFP that the police have cordoned off the port area, and firefighters have promptly responded to the explosion site. The situation remains dynamic and is evolving as authorities assess the extent of the damage and attend to the affected individuals.
