BREAKING: Supreme Court Nullifies Rivers LG Election

The Supreme Court has ruled that the local government elections conducted by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission on October 5, 2024 are invalid.

The court nullified the polls, stating that they violated provisions of the Electoral Act.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Jamilu Tukur declared the election invalid, citing a lack of compliance with legal provisions. He stated that the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission acted unlawfully by continuing voter registration even after announcing the election date.

The court further ruled that the processes leading up to the election were flawed, breaching Section 150 of the Electoral Act. As a result, the election was deemed void and of no legal effect.

This decision effectively renders the elections void and raises questions about the next steps for local governance in the state.
