Aliou Sall, brother of former Senegalese president Macky Sall, has been formally charged with corruption-related offences, his lawyer confirmed Monday. The charges include money laundering, criminal conspiracy to launder money, corruption, and influence peddling.
Aliou Sall, who had been held in custody with his wife since October 7 at a police station in Dakar, was released on bail Monday evening. Authorities cited suspect financial transactions linked to a real estate company owned by the couple, involving land acquisitions in Dakar.

In 2019, Aliou Sall resigned as head of a state-run savings deposit after being linked to a separate alleged corruption case in the oil and gas sectors, which was later closed in 2021 due to insufficient evidence. He also previously served as mayor of Guediawaye.
Other family members have faced similar scrutiny. Amadou Mansour Faye, Sall’s brother-in-law and former community development minister, was charged with corruption and embezzlement related to Covid-19 funds and granted provisional release in September.
Senegal’s current administration, led by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, has pledged to combat corruption and mismanagement, with investigations starting at the highest levels, including targeting former president Macky Sall himself.
