Burna Boy, Asake Nominated for 2025 MTV VMA

Burna Boy, Asake, and Wizkid are flying the flag for African music at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards, securing major nominations as Afrobeats continues its rise on the global stage.

Burna Boy and Asake are the most-nominated African artistes, with two nods each. Burna Boy is up for Video for Good with Higher and Best Afrobeats for Tatata featuring Travis Scott. Asake earned two nominations in the Best Afrobeats category – Active with Travis Scott and Get It Right with Tems.

Wizkid also made the list with a Best Afrobeats nomination for Piece of My Heart, his collaboration with Brent Faiyaz.

Other Nigerian stars recognised include Tems (alongside Asake on Get It Right), Rema (Baby (Is It a Crime)), and Ayra Starr, who received a nomination for MTV PUSH Performance of the Year with Last Heartbreak Song.

The wider African presence features South Africa’s Tyla and Ghanaian-American singer Moliy, both nominated in the Best Afrobeats category, reflecting the genre’s continued influence on global music.

Internationally, Lady Gaga leads all nominees with 12 nominations, including Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, and Video of the Year.
