Cameroon is set for its presidential elections this Sunday, with electoral officials confirming their operational readiness.

However, the pre-election process has been marked by a dispute over access for election monitors.

Despite complaints from the 107 observer organisations regarding inadequate space and delays in accreditation, the electoral body has guaranteed that all duly registered monitors will be allowed to participate, even at the last minute.

This crucial clarification comes as officials prepare for voting to begin tomorrow at 8 a.m., though security and low voter turnout remain key concerns.

News Central TV correspondent Kathleen Ndongmo reported from Yaoundé after visiting several electoral body offices, including the headquarters of Elections Cameroon.

Officials stated that substantial electoral materials have already been distributed to many polling stations.

Ndongmo also highlighted the significance of diaspora voting, noting that approximately 34,000 expatriate Cameroonians are registered to vote through the nation’s embassies worldwide.

While the security situation remains a concern, the biggest worry expressed by election observers is the potential for a low turnout rate.

Furthermore, in a move aimed at maximising participation, voters who have not yet collected their voter cards will still be able to do so tomorrow morning directly at their respective polling units. They are being asked to visit their polling units promptly for collection.

Today marks the close of the campaign period. As the country prepares for the polls, the central hope among observers and citizens alike is that the election will proceed peacefully and that the turnout—which is the biggest worry—will be high enough to effect the political change that Cameroonians have sought over the last 40 years.
