The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has praised the late Imam Abdullahi Abubakar as a lasting symbol of courage and humanity for rescuing 262 Christians during a deadly attack in 2018.
In a statement on Saturday, CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh described the Imam’s actions as an exceptional demonstration of bravery and selflessness in the face of extreme danger, one that will remain historically significant.
President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi also mourned Imam Abubakar’s passing at the age of 92, commending him as a true champion of human life.
CAN highlighted that by risking his own life to save others, the Imam firmly chose the path of humanity over personal safety. “The late Imam Abdullahi Abubakar will forever be remembered for his rare moral courage and selflessness,” the statement read. “His intervention saved 262 Christians during a violent attack in 2018 and transcended religious boundaries, affirming the sanctity of human life above all else.”
The association noted that the Imam’s heroic actions not only preserved lives but also fostered interfaith unity and renewed hope in a country often strained by mistrust and division. CAN described his bravery as a unifying act that restored faith in humanity and demonstrated the power of conscience, love, and faith in promoting peace.
Imam Abubakar’s contributions were formally recognised in 2021 during CAN’s Sapphire Anniversary celebrations. Archbishop Okoh said, “While plaques may fade, his legacy will endure as a shining example for religious leaders and communities for generations to come.”
CAN urged continued public acknowledgement of the Imam’s heroism, advocating engagement with his family to ensure his story continues to inspire national unity, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence. The association concluded by expressing deep sympathy to his family, community, and all those whose lives were touched by his extraordinary example.
