A car drove into a crowd during Liverpool’s Premier League victory parade on Monday evening, prompting a swift emergency response, police have confirmed.
Merseyside Police said they were alerted shortly after 6:00 p.m. (1700 GMT) following reports that a vehicle had struck multiple pedestrians. The incident occurred as fans gathered in large numbers to celebrate Liverpool’s league triumph with a city-wide parade.
“The car came to a stop at the scene and a male has been detained,” the police said in a statement.
An AFP journalist at the scene witnessed at least four individuals being carried away on stretchers. Footage circulating on social media showed a dark-coloured car veering into the dense crowd, which had assembled to cheer on players parading the Premier League trophy aboard an open-top bus.
The celebrations quickly turned to chaos as police and members of the public rushed to assist those who were injured. Several people were seen lying on the ground as officers secured the area and established a cordon. A fire engine was also present.
North West Ambulance Service said their teams were working alongside other emergency responders to assess the situation and provide urgent medical care.
“Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible,” the service said in a statement.
