Former player Michael Carrick has emerged as the favourite to become Manchester United’s caretaker head coach, sources said on Monday.
Club chiefs aim to have an appointment in place when players return to training on Wednesday, with talks progressing around the 44-year-old.
Carrick previously managed United for three games in 2021 after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal, winning two and drawing one, before leaving when Ralf Rangnick arrived.
Solskjaer held in-person talks with the club on Saturday, though no decision was announced.
United sacked Ruben Amorim after 14 months in charge on January 5, with another former player, Darren Fletcher, assuming temporary first-team responsibilities following Amorim’s departure.
United were knocked out of the FA Cup by Brighton on Sunday, which could influence Fletcher’s interim tenure. He had drawn with Burnley in the Premier League last Wednesday.
