Manchester United interim manager Michael Carrick has dismissed recent social media criticism from his former teammate Paul Scholes as the club prepares for a pivotal Premier League clash against Aston Villa.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Carrick emphasised his desire to remain calm despite the “extreme” nature of online commentary.
Scholes had previously posted a sarcastic remark on Instagram suggesting United had performed poorly in their last four matches, though he later clarified he meant no offence and reached out to Carrick personally to clear the air.

The Sunday fixture at Old Trafford carries significant weight for the Champions League qualification race.

United currently sit in third place, holding a narrow advantage over Unai Emery’s fourth-placed Villa side only by goal difference.
With the top five teams likely to secure a spot in Europe’s elite competition next season, both clubs are eager to bounce back; United are looking to recover from a recent 2-1 defeat at Newcastle, which marked Carrick’s first loss since stepping in for Ruben Amorim in January.
The team’s current form is a sharp contrast to last season’s disappointing 15th-place finish.
Carrick noted that while the loss at St James’ Park was a setback, such results are inevitable in a competitive league.
He expressed excitement for the upcoming challenge and provided a boost for the squad by confirming that midfielder Mason Mount has made significant progress in his recovery.
Mount could potentially return to the lineup this weekend after being sidelined for two months.
