Brendan Rodgers has stepped down as Celtic manager, with the club confirming his departure on Monday following a disappointing opening to the season for the Scottish champions.

Celtic announced that former manager Martin O’Neill along with ex-player Shaun Maloney will oversee first-team duties on a temporary basis while the search for a long-term replacement gets underway.

Rodgers’ return to Glasgow has come to an abrupt end after Sunday’s 3-1 loss to Hearts, a result that left Celtic eight points behind the Edinburgh club in the Premiership standings.

“Football manager Brendan Rodgers has today tendered his resignation” and “will leave his role with immediate effect”, Celtic said in an official statement.

“Brendan leaves with our thanks for the role he has played during a period of continued success for the club and we wish him further success in the future.”

The club also confirmed that the recruitment process has already begun.

“We are pleased that during this interim period former Celtic manager, Martin O’Neill and former Celtic player, Shaun Maloney have agreed to take charge of Celtic first-team matters,” the statement continued.

Rodgers, now 52, returned to Celtic Park in 2023 and delivered back-to-back league titles, adding to the titles he won during his earlier tenure in 2017 and 2018.

Before that second spell in Glasgow, he managed at Swansea City, Liverpool and Leicester City. His initial stint with Celtic, from May 2016 until February 2019, included sweeping domestic dominance with consecutive trebles.

In that first season, Celtic amassed a record 106 points and became the first Scottish top-flight side to go a full league campaign unbeaten since 1899.

Rodgers maintained that winning momentum in 2023-24 and 2024-25, adding both the Scottish Cup and the Scottish League Cup to the trophy cabinet.

However, pressure intensified this term after the club was knocked out of the Champions League by Kazakhstan’s Kairat Almaty, casting early doubt over Celtic’s competitive direction and ultimately contributing to his exit.
