Chadian Households Receive Free Water and Electricity

The Chadian government has announced the provision of free water and electricity for households in the country until the end of the year.

The government has pegged monthly household consumption it intends to pay at 300 kWh of electricity and 15,000 litres of water.

The government also said it would wave water and electricity bills for residents with outstanding arrears.

It also intends to slash transport taxes that could lower the cost of transportation which increased last month due to the rise in fuel prices.

Campaigns Conclude for Controversial Constitutional Referendum in Chad

Chad’s interim President Mahamat Déby certified the policy “to assist households”, a joint statement by the presidency and finance minister said.

Many Chadians see the move as Déby’s attempt to win the electorates. Déby will be contesting for the presidency between May and June when Chad holds presidential polls.

Some residents also say that the move is worthless as several parts in the capital, N’Djamena, have faced a power outage for the past two weeks.

However, many Chadians have welcomed the policy as a much-needed relief to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.
