Mozambique’s President, Daniel Francisco Chapo, has praised the Mambas for reaching the round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco and promised a special reward if they defeat Nigeria, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
The Mambas secured a meeting with one of the tournament favourites, Nigeria, after finishing third in Group F, despite a 2–1 defeat to Cameroon in their final group match.
In a statement issued on Thursday, January 1, to the players and coaching staff, President Chapo commended the team’s display during the group stage.
He described the achievement as historic and richly deserved, saying it had brought great pride to the nation.

Speaking on behalf of Mozambicans, the president applauded the players and technical crew for their courage, discipline, and determination, which drove the team to a landmark continental success.
Jornal Notícias reported that, to further motivate the squad, President Chapo pledged an exceptional bonus of 500,000 meticais (about ₦11.3 million) for each player and coach should they overcome the Super Eagles and reach the quarter-finals.
He reiterated the country’s full support for the team and expressed confidence in their ability to beat Nigeria.
Nigeria and Mozambique will meet at the Complexe Sportif de Fès on Monday, January 5, with kick-off set for 8 p.m.
