China’s state media announced on Wednesday the development of a new generation of quadruped military robots designed for combat.

These “wolf” robots, an upgrade from earlier models, are equipped with rifles and advanced capabilities for reconnaissance and precision strikes.

According to state broadcaster CCTV, these robots are intended to replace human soldiers in high-risk situations, thereby reducing casualties.

A video released by CCTV shows the robots operating in challenging environments, including climbing stairs and navigating a smoke-filled battlefield.

The robots are seen carrying heavy gear and firing at target dummies from up to 100 metres away.

Unlike their predecessors, the “wolf” robots are designed to work together as a pack.

One robot would act as the “pack leader,” collecting intelligence and relaying information, while others would focus on firing at targets or transporting supplies.

Chong Ja Ian, an associate professor at the National University of Singapore, suggests that the public unveiling of these robots serves a dual purpose: to build national pride and to “intimidate potential adversaries.”

The advanced technology highlights China’s significant investment in robotics, a field where some experts believe the country is gaining an advantage over the United States.
