On Wednesday, China called for “dialogue” to address trade disputes and stated its “resolute opposition” to US export duties.
“China expresses strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition,” Lin Jian, a spokesman representing the foreign ministry, stated.
He noted that “fair and mutually respectful dialogue and consultations” were demanded by China.
In its ongoing trade battle with the United States, Beijing launched a counterattack on Tuesday, imposing new duties on a wide range of goods, including agricultural equipment and U.S. crude oil.
The US then imposed new 10 per cent tariffs on all imports from China.
“The measures taken by China are necessary to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests,” said Lin.
“There are no winners in a trade war or a tariff war,” he said.
According to US officials, the deadly fentanyl trade kills tens of thousands of people annually. The White House stated that its tariffs are intended to pressure China to take further action to stop this trade.
“Not going to allow China to continue to source and distribute deadly fentanyl into our country,” American President Donald Trump declared, according to the White House.
Beijing defended its zero-tolerance drug policies on Wednesday and denied any responsibility for the fentanyl pandemic.
“China has one of the toughest policies against drugs in the world,” added Lin.
“Fentanyl is the United States’ issue, and its root cause lies within the United States itself,” he said.
