Chad Cholera Death Toll Rises to 13

Chad has recorded 13 deaths from a cholera outbreak since it was officially declared in July, with nearly 240 infections confirmed across the country.

According to the country’s health ministry, 239 cases had been reported nationwide as of Monday, including 13 deaths, representing a fatality rate of 5.4 percent.

The outbreak has affected the northern province of Hadjer Lamis and the capital, N’Djamena, where 11 of the 13 deaths were recorded during August.

Health authorities said more than 50,800 people have been vaccinated since the outbreak was officially declared on July 24, although the first fatalities were reported on June 13.

Chad joins several African countries, including the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Nigeria, that have recorded cholera outbreaks in recent months.

Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal disease caused by consuming food or water contaminated with bacteria.

While it can be treated effectively with oral rehydration salts or antibiotics, untreated cases can become fatal within hours.

The health ministry attributed the continued spread of the disease to limited access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation facilities, stressing the need for improved public health measures to contain the outbreak.
