Court Grants Malami ₦500 Million Bail Trial Set

Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to former Attorney General and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami, alongside two co-defendants, for ₦500 million with two sureties.

The judge ruled that the sureties must own landed property in Asokoro, Maitama, or Gwarinpa and deposit their travel documents with the court.

The deputy chief registrar will verify the property documents, while the sureties must also swear to an affidavit of means.

Justice Nwite further ordered Malami to submit his travel documents to the court and barred him from travelling in the country without prior approval. Malami and his sureties must each provide two recent passport photographs.

Pending fulfilment of the bail conditions, the court remanded Malami at the Kuje Correctional Centre.

The judge fixed February 17 for the commencement of the trial on the corruption charges. The same bail terms apply to Malami’s son, Abdulaziz Malami, and Hajia Asabe Bashir, an employee of Rahamaniyya Properties Limited.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) filed a 16-count charge of alleged money laundering against Malami, his son and his wife.
