A High Court in the Federal Capital Territory has scheduled 10 hearing days to conclude the trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele over the naira redesign.
Justice Maryann Anenih set the dates on Wednesday after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Emefiele’s lawyers reached an agreement.
The hearings will be held on February 3 and 10; April 1 and 2; May 11-14; and June 9 and 10, with the court aiming to wrap up the trial, which began in 2024, within this period.

EFCC witness Emere Chinedu, who led the investigative panel, told the court that “the State House gave approval for the naira redesign, but with a proviso that it must be done locally.”
He alleged that the redesigned notes were instead printed abroad during Emefiele’s tenure.
Chinedu also said Emefiele made six extra-judicial statements to the panel between October 26 and November 2, 2023. He confirmed that the video clips showing the hardships Nigerians suffered during the redesign were downloaded from the internet and predated the investigation.
Emefiele, facing charge FCT/HC/CR/264/2024, has pleaded not guilty.
The court adjourned to February 3 to continue cross-examination of the EFCC witness.
