Portugal captain, Cristiano Ronaldo, has announced that he will not participate in the upcoming Club World Cup, ending speculation about a potential transfer to one of the teams involved.
During a press conference before Sunday’s Nations League final against Spain in Munich, the Portugal captain clarified that rumours regarding his participation in the newly expanded event were inaccurate.
“I will not be at the Club World Cup,” the Portugal veteran said, but added he had “been contacted” by several participating teams.
Ronaldo arrived for the Nations League in Germany amid ongoing uncertainty about his club’s future. His contract with Saudi club Al-Nassr is set to end in June.
In May, the Portuguese star indicated on social media that “the chapter is over,” as reports suggested he might join another team, possibly Saudi club Al Hilal, one of the participants in the tournament in the United States in June.
Ronaldo stated that he was not interested in making a short-term decision to participate in the competition. The forward mentioned that his decision regarding his future is “almost final.”
