A civil society organisation (CSO), MonITNG, has exposed the deplorable condition of the Uromi General Hospital in the Esan North-East LGA of Edo State.
The CSO, in a statement shared on X on Thursday, described the Uromi General Hospital as a shadow of its former self, adding that the hospital, which was built to save lives, has been left to decay for over five years.

According to MonITNG, some sections of the hospital are close to collapse, and the wards lack hospital furniture, while essential medical equipment needed to save lives and administer treatment is either missing or no longer functional.
In pictures shared by the CSO, it was observed that some beds in the wards lack mattresses, and the hospital’s ambulance was abandoned.
As the hospital suffers neglect and decay, patients bear the brunt. Many patients are left with no option but to travel long distances in search of healthcare, leaving pregnant women, children and the elderly vulnerable and at risk of medical complications.
“This level of neglect is unacceptable for a public hospital that remains a lifeline for thousands of people. The situation persisted during the administration of @GovernorObaseki, when the hospital’s renovation was not prioritised. Unfortunately, the current government led by Monday Okpebholo has yet to take urgent action to restore the facility,” the CSO noted.
It also questioned why the Edo State Government is constructing a new hospital in Udomi Village while longstanding hospitals like Uromi General Hospital and Ekpoma General Hospital struggle to survive.
“Residents are asking a simple question: why abandon existing hospitals that already serve thousands of people?,” MonITNG queried.
It also appealed to Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, to prioritise the renovation of Uromi General Hospital to enable residents who live close to the facility to get access to quality healthcare close to home, without the need to travel far in search of healthcare.
“Restoring this facility will immediately improve access to healthcare for thousands of residents who depend on it. Healthcare cannot wait. The people of Uromi and the surrounding communities deserve a functional hospital now. Action must be taken before this vital public institution is completely lost,” the CSO appealed.
