Legendary Belgian cyclist Eddy Merckx was discharged from the hospital on Friday after experiencing complications from a hip fracture, his wife, Claudine, informed the Belgian daily, Het Nieuwsblad.
Merckx had been hospitalised since July 13 due to ongoing issues with a hip prosthesis fitted after a cycling accident last December.
In June, the five-time Tour de France winner told AFP that he had also developed a skin infection requiring intensive antibiotic treatment, which he disclosed during a reception for his 80th birthday.
He is expected to return to the hospital within a month for a new, permanent prosthesis. Until then, he will remain housebound.
“For now, Eddy is just happy to be able to go home. He feels most comfortable in his familiar surroundings,” his wife stated.
