The death toll from Cyclone Chido, which devastated Mozambique after ravaging the French Indian Ocean archipelago of Mayotte, has climbed to 76, according to Mozambique’s National Institute of Risk and Disaster Management on Saturday.
Chido made landfall in Mozambique’s northern Cabo Delgado province on Sunday, leaving widespread destruction in its wake. Officials report that nearly 62,000 homes have been destroyed, displacing thousands of families.
The cyclone had earlier torn through Mayotte, where hundreds are feared to have lost their lives.
The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has highlighted urgent humanitarian needs for the affected population, including shelter, food, and essential non-food items such as hygiene kits, dignity kits, soap, and mosquito nets.
The international community continues to monitor the situation and coordinate relief efforts to address the dire conditions faced by survivors.
