The coastal city of Beira in Mozambique has been hit with a cyclone, leading to the destruction of properties including one of the country’s most important ports.
The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) has said the magnitude of the cyclone has since reduced to a tropical storm.
Mozambique’s institute for disaster management has said the damage was mild and the extent of the destruction is not quantifiable at the moment.
Cyclone Eloise was registered at a speed of 160kph, with acres of lands flooded, properties destroyed and cars sinking in the water.
It is not Beira’s first destruction with 2019 Cyclone Idai destroying the city and leading to the death of at least 1,000 people in Mozambique, Mozambique and Malawi.
The cyclone has been graded a category 2 storm – hurricanes with maximum wind speeds of 154-177kph.
The cyclone is expected to recede in strength in the coming days, with the WMO also predicting heavy rainfall in Mpumalanga and Kwa-Zulu Natal areas of South Africa.
Eloise has been seen in parts of Botswana with the eastern part of the country seen as having possible hits.
