Cyclone Jude Claims 16 Lives in Mozambique, Third Storm in Four Months

The death toll from Cyclone Jude, which struck northern Mozambique last week, has risen to at least 16, according to the latest figures released by the National Institute of Meteorology on Saturday.

Authorities reported that at least two people remain missing, while nearly 60 others sustained injuries as the storm tore through the region.

Cyclone Jude made landfall on Monday, bringing destructive winds of up to 195 km/h (120 mph) and more than 250mm (10 inches) of rainfall within 24 hours, causing severe damage to infrastructure and communities along Mozambique’s Indian Ocean coastline.

Cyclone Jude Claims 16 Lives in Mozambique, Third Storm in Four Months

This marks the third major cyclone to hit Mozambique in the past four months. In December, Cyclone Chido claimed at least 120 lives and destroyed nearly 120,000 homes. A month later, in mid-January, Cyclone Dikeledi left at least five people dead and damaged approximately 3,500 homes.

Mozambique, one of the world’s most vulnerable nations to extreme weather events, continues to grapple with the devastating impact of cyclones, exacerbating an already fragile humanitarian situation.
