Authorities in Cyprus have initiated a combined land and sea search for a Polish tourist who disappeared after renting a boat in Paphos, a resort city on the western coast, officials announced on Wednesday.

Police on the island are seeking public assistance in locating Piotr Mentel, a 35-year-old Polish man who was reported missing on Tuesday.

According to police reports, Mentel rented an inflatable boat from a water sports facility in Paphos and was last seen leaving the Latsi marina alone on Tuesday morning.

Later that day, at approximately 4:30 pm, his unmanned boat was discovered adrift about 200 metres offshore near the village of Argaka in the Paphos district.

The Larnaca Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) stated that a search and rescue operation for the missing tourist began on Tuesday in the nearby waters and continued throughout the night without success.

The JRCC confirmed that the operation resumed on Wednesday, involving police and National Guard helicopters, drones, ground teams, marine police, and naval units.

Cyprus, a popular Mediterranean holiday destination, attracts many visitors from Poland, and local hotels have reported an increase in tourism coinciding with the Easter period.
