Zambia rescued a point dramatically as Patson Daka struck in injury time to secure a 1-1 draw against Mali in their opening match of the Africa Cup of Nations on Monday.

The Leicester City forward, who has managed just one goal for the club in the English Championship this season, rose to meet a Mathews Banda cross in the second minute of added time, nodding home to snatch an unlikely equaliser for the Chipolopolo.

Mali had largely controlled the Group A contest at the Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca but were left to rue missed opportunities, most notably when El Bilal Touré failed to convert a first-half penalty.

His spot-kick was saved by Zambia goalkeeper Willard Mwanza after Banda had been penalised for a foul on Nene Dorgeles following a VAR review.

The Eagles eventually broke the deadlock shortly after the hour when Auxerre forward Lassine Sinayoko bundled the ball home from close range at the second attempt after a corner.

However, Daka’s late intervention denied Mali all three points, a result that will please group hosts Morocco, who opened their campaign with a 2-0 win over Comoros on Sunday.

Morocco and Mali face each other next in Rabat on Friday, while Zambia, who have now gone 10 AFCON matches without a win since lifting the trophy in 2012, take on Comoros in their next outing.
