Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has begun a major shake-up of its operations and staff after discovering multiple acts of sabotage that threatened the safety of the 650,000-barrels-per-day plant.
In a letter dated September 24, 2025, the refinery said it was “constrained to carry out a total reorganisation” due to “many recent cases of reported sabotage” across several units.
Affected staff were directed to return company property and await clearance before receiving their entitlements.
A senior official confirmed the development but rejected claims of mass layoffs, stressing that the move was aimed at plugging leakages and protecting company assets, not punishing union activity.

“It doesn’t mean they have been sacked… It is more like a clean-up in the system,” the official said, adding that those cleared of wrongdoing could be reabsorbed.
The company said the decision was taken suddenly to prevent suspects from covering their tracks and assured that refinery operations remain ongoing.
The plant, which began production in 2024, has faced labour disputes and pricing controversies amid its efforts to end Nigeria’s dependence on imported fuel.
