A large-scale cholera vaccination campaign has been launched in Darfur, Sudan, aiming to immunise 1.86 million people across six localities.
The initiative, which began on September 21, 2025, responds to a rapid outbreak that has caused over 12,000 cases and 358 deaths in the region since May.
With conflict severely disrupting health services and access to safe water, the campaign is being coordinated by Sudan’s Ministry of Health, WHO, UNICEF, and supported by Gavi and other international partners.
Vaccines have been transported through challenging conditions, with initial rollouts in Nyala and Ad Daein and plans to expand to Tawila by the end of the month.
Cholera spreads easily in areas with poor sanitation and limited clean water.
The campaign combines vaccination with efforts to improve hygiene, provide clean water, and ensure prompt treatment.
Over a 10-day period, health workers aim to reach 97% of the target population, offering critical protection and hope to the most affected communities.
