Though he no longer hosts late-night talk shows, David Letterman is by no means prepared to retire. Letterman discussed his career and his aspirations to continue it in a recently released interview with GQ.

When asked whether he would consider himself “semi-retired” at this point, he responded, “Retirement is a myth.”

“Retirement is absurd. You’re not going to retire,” Letterman continued. “You can’t retire because of the human mechanism.”

Letterman joked, “But what do they do?” in response to the journalist’s observation that individuals do retire. Sit there and wait for the show “Judge Judy” to start.

“You still want to create as long as you’re healthy. It took me a few years to realise that, “Oh, this is a whole different beat,” but you will discover methods to accomplish it after I quit performing in the performance,” he remarked.

Additionally, it’s mostly disappointing without the rhythm you’re used to. You must therefore identify something significant to you.

With his “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction” talk series on Netflix, Letterman has accomplished precisely that. Miley Cyrus, Kim Kardashian, and Barack Obama have all appeared as guests on the show.

“I’m surprised that I’m still doing it at my age,” the former late-night host told GQ, even though he enjoys it.

However, he added, “I still enjoy what we’re doing.” What then does that signify? I am not sure.

After hosting “The Late Show” for 22 years, Letterman left the show in 2015. In 2023, he was a guest again on what is now “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”
