South African cricketer Quinton de Kock has identified mental fortitude as the deciding factor in Sunday’s high-stakes Super Eights clash between India and South Africa.
A rematch of the T20 World Cup final from two years ago, the encounter in Ahmedabad features two titans who both cruised through the group stages with flawless four-out-of-four records.
De Kock noted that because the two sides have faced each other frequently in recent months, there are few tactical secrets left, leaving the “small moments” and the ability to handle immense pressure as the only true differentiators.
Despite South Africa’s strong form, De Kock was quick to dismiss the notion of favourites, describing the T20 format as inherently “fickle.”
He emphasised that in a World Cup setting, momentum can shift entirely within the span of just two or three overs, often driven by a single individual’s performance.

This unpredictability, he argued, makes it impossible to rely on past series results, such as South Africa’s 3-1 loss to India late last year, as a definitive guide for tomorrow’s performance.
The spotlight remains on India’s batting lineup, which has shown flashes of inconsistency despite their unbeaten status. Most notably, world number-one T20 batsman Abhishek Sharma has struggled with three consecutive ducks.
However, De Kock offered a defence of the 25-year-old opener, suggesting that such failures are part of the learning curve for a young player and predicting that a player of Sharma’s calibre is bound to produce a match-winning innings soon.
As both teams eye a potential return to the final on March 8, the Sunday match serves as a critical litmus test for their championship credentials.
For South Africa, it is an opportunity to prove they can overcome their “finalist” hurdles, while for the defending champions, India, it is a chance to stabilise their top order.
With both squads intimately familiar with one another’s styles, the battle will likely be won in the heads of the players as much as with the bat and ball.
