Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the semi-finals of Roland Garros on Tuesday, easily overpowering American 12th seed Tommy Paul, allowing him to win only five games during the night session on Court Philippe Chatrier.

In just one hour and 34 minutes, the Spaniard dismantled the former world number nine Paul with a score of 6-0, 6-1, 6-4, setting up a semi-final clash against Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti.

In the other quarterfinal match of the day, eighth seed, Lorenzo Musetti defeated another American, Frances Tiafoe in four sets. This will be the third encounter between Alcaraz and Musetti this clay season.

Alcaraz has been dominant in their matchups, having defeated the Italian in the Monte Carlo final and again in the semi-finals as he claimed the title in Rome.

The 22-year-old’s brilliant performance on the main court in Paris has many predicting he will complete the trifecta against Musetti while aiming to retain his championship.

Alcaraz recorded 40 winners compared to 22 unforced errors, decisively putting his previous inconsistent performances behind him. Despite some earlier success against Alcaraz, Paul took eight games to finally score as his competitor quickly took control of the match with a mix of powerful groundstrokes, skillful drop shots, and lobs.

Paul showed commendable resistance in the final set but could not overcome Alcaraz, who secured a break in the ninth game before serving to win without dropping a point. Paul has suffered losses in his last four encounters with Alcaraz, including their previous showdown at the same tournament last year during the Olympic Games quarter-finals.
