Following the dramatic seizure of Nicolas Maduro by U.S. forces to face drug trafficking charges in New York, Delcy Rodriguez was officially sworn in as Venezuela’s interim president on Monday.

While the National Assembly and the military have pledged their support to Rodriguez, the atmosphere in Caracas remains volatile.

During the ceremony, Rodriguez expressed her grief over what she termed the “kidnapping” of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, yet she has signalled a potential willingness to cooperate with Washington.

The transition of power keeps control within a tight circle, as Rodriguez’s brother, Jorge, was simultaneously reelected as parliament speaker.

Tensions escalated late Monday as security forces reportedly fired upon unidentified drones hovering over the Miraflores presidential palace.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to the new interim leader, demanding swift policy reforms and continued oil access under the threat of further action.
