Delta CP Redeploys DPO Over Extortion Claims

The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, has ordered the immediate redeployment of the Divisional Police Officer of Jesse in the Ethiope East Local Government Area following allegations of extortion.

The officer, CSP Chidi Nwabuzor, allegedly acted in concert with two other policemen, identified as Bright and Usman.

In a statement issued on Friday, January 9, the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said the command became aware of the allegations after a video featuring a woman recounting the incident circulated widely online.

According to Edafe, the woman claimed that the officers extorted ₦2.5 million from her with the promise of securing the release of her brother, who was in police custody.

The police explained that on January 1, 2026, the youth leader of the Jesse community arrested several suspects and handed them over to the police.

One of them, Israel Onojeruo, aged 20, and the woman’s brother, was arrested after another suspect, Okoro Desmond, allegedly confessed to selling a firearm to him. The suspects were later transferred to the State Anti-Cult Unit for further investigation.

Reacting to the extortion allegation, CP Adesola ordered the AC X-Squad to probe the conduct of the officers involved.

The constable identified as Bright has been detained at the command headquarters, while the DPO has been removed from his post and redeployed pending the outcome of the investigation.

The police said the redeployment followed multiple complaints of extortion and unprofessional conduct levelled against the DPO from various sources.

The commissioner assured the public that the command would decisively sanction any officer found guilty, in line with the Police Act and regulations.

He stressed that the command would not tolerate extortion, intimidation, or unprofessional behaviour and urged residents to report misconduct through the Command Complaint Response Unit.
