Independent Newspapers was honoured as a premier national institution during its Silver Jubilee Awards in Lagos on Saturday, with guests describing the publication as a unifying force that Nigerians “reckon with.”
The ceremony, which celebrated 25 years of journalistic excellence, brought together a distinguished assembly of business leaders, traditional rulers, and community advocates to recognise individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service to the nation.
Esther Obafemi, the MD/CEO of Avant Facilities Limited, emphasised that the publication remains a respected institution despite the changing habits of modern readers.
She noted that the gala is a significant occasion because it highlights the efforts of Nigerians who are dedicated to the nation’s growth.
According to Obafemi, seeing citizens honoured in such a public forum inspires others to do more for the country.
The event also drew high-level traditional representation from Ibadan land.
Chief Kayode Kadelu, the Oota Balogun of Ibadanland, attended on behalf of His Imperial Majesty, Oba Dr Rashidi Akanmu Ladoja.
Accompanied by a prominent contingent including four Mogajis and the secretary to the Olubadan Council, Chief Kadelu underscored that the milestone anniversary was of great importance to the monarch and the community he represents.
The integrity of the honours was a central theme, with ThankGod Meekor of the Ogoni Welfare Association praising the organisation for its “due diligence” and objectivity.
He specifically highlighted the award given to Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey, the project coordinator of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), for his impactful work in the environmental cleanup of Ogoni land.
Meekor noted that while many have managed the programme, this tenure has stood out for its merit, urging the media house to maintain these high standards in all future endeavours.
