Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, has claimed that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has become desperate to clinch power by all means.

Melaye’s statement comes a day after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced it would no longer recognise the David Mark-led faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) faction or that of Rafiu Bala, who claims he ought to be the party’s national chairman.

INEC’s decision has triggered controversy in Nigeria’s political landscape, with many Nigerians and ADC party members pointing fingers at the ruling party for stoking a crisis within the party.

Melaye, who spoke to Channel TV, said the ADC is the only viable opposition party in Nigeria. The ADC has seen an exodus of politicians who have dumped their parties to join the ADC coalition. According to Melaye, the APC is panicking as a result.

“The APC have become so desperate. The APC have seen that ADC is the only opposition we have in the Federal Republic of Nigeria to challenge them in 2011. And they’ve seen an exodus of movements of people from various political parties into ADC,” said Melaye.

“And I don’t, me personally, I’m shocked why they are panicked. You said you have 32 governors.  You have taken over every, then why are you afraid? So in a nutshell, it is not about ADC.”

Melaye also accused Nigerian President Bola Tinubu of imposing himself on Nigerians. The former senator, Melaye, alleged that Tinubu wants to be coronated and does not want to conduct elections in 2027.

“President Ahmed Bola Tinubu wants to be coronated. He doesn’t want an election. He just wants to be coronated. He wants us to practise a monarchical system of government, a ‘Kabiyesi’ mentality, where he will just be coronated. And even from what is said in 2022, 2023, we can see from it that the man who said, It’s my turn,” he added.

“No Democrat will tell you it is my turn, because it’s not a monarchical system of government.  It’s not a chieftaincy title. You know? In a democracy, there’s no turn. The man who said, grab it, take it, and run away with it,  is that a democratic language? It’s a Mafia language. Only the Mafia will talk like that. No Democrat will talk like that.”
