Diversity Makes One-Party Nigeria Impossible – Okonkwo

Nigerian actor, lawyer and politician Kenneth Okonkwo has firmly stated that Nigeria’s diversity and commitment to democracy make a one-party system very unlikely.

In an interview with Newscentral on Tuesday, Okonkwo explained that Nigeria’s political landscape is far too diverse for any one party to dominate, as some have suggested.

“There’s no way a one-party system could ever take over Nigeria,” he said. “We’re too diverse, too aware, and too democratic for that. A one-party state feels like a dictatorship, where one person controls everything. Nigerians won’t allow that.”

Okonkwo’s comments come amid growing discussions about political consolidation in the country.

“The idea of turning Nigeria into a one-party state, like Lagos, will fail,” he remarked. “Tinubu doesn’t have the power to reshape Nigeria’s politics in that way. This country has fought for its democracy, and we won’t give that up.”

He went on to highlight Nigeria’s complex political and cultural makeup, noting that the country’s many ethnic groups, regional differences, and political viewpoints make a single-party system simply unfeasible.

“What makes Nigeria unique is that it’s made up of so many different people, each with their own views and needs,” Okonkwo said. “A one-party system just wouldn’t work here, and the people wouldn’t stand for it.”
